After watching the “Social Network,” and finding it safe to assume that Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg is a total jerk, I came across this article about a recent program of his and contemplated reconsidering.
Last year, Zuckerberg announced his $100 million donation on “The Oprah Winfrey Show” to the Newark public school system. His gift is managed by a foundation that holds a two-year $600,000 program, which provides $10,000 grants to teachers who come up with new classroom programs. The foundation has already raised money to match Zuckerberg’s gift and some of the funding has gone towards new schools and teacher recruitments.
While this idea is really nice, I think that all of this money should not be limited to one school system. While I realize that a lot of money goes into maintaining good school systems, this foundation has already raised so much and is talking about future gifts. I feel as though this can be applied to other public school systems that are in dire need of assistance. So, in the end, my opinion of him has not changed.
