Reading Questions


  1. In Campaigns and Movements, Richard Rorty talks about Irving Howe;s view on the differences between a movement and a campaign. How does he say each is different? Would Howe consider the Occupy Wall Street protests around the world the beginnings of a movement?
  2. Kiva seems to have been able to find a way to help start-up businesses in developing countries. How is it, that Kiva is able to loan money to risky businesses without hurting it or the investors, but the big banks seemed to fail at doing so? Does Kiva have a better picking process than the banks did?
  3. What changes have allowed for the increase of citizen organizations? Do you think the current economic climate will slow this progression? Why or why not?
